Subject revision

How to revise HKDSE Biology: from notes to explanations

Reading a Biology chapter until it feels familiar is only the start. A useful revision session ends with something you can explain, draw or answer without the page in front of you. Here is a routine you can use on one topic at a time.

Start with one learning target

Choose a target small enough to test today: explain enzyme action, compare diffusion and osmosis, or trace blood through the heart. ‘Revise transport’ is too broad to tell you whether you have finished.

Use your school’s topic list alongside the EDB Biology curriculum resources. Keep the compulsory topics and your chosen electives visible, and follow the requirements for your examination year. This guide offers a study routine, not a replacement syllabus.

Close the notes and retrieve

Read a short explanation, cover it, then write three points from memory. For a process, draw arrows between the steps. For a structure, sketch a simple outline and label its parts before checking your notes.

The check matters. Correct a missing relationship in a different colour and explain it aloud. Copying the whole paragraph again can hide the specific gap you need to fix.

  • Definition: can I name the process precisely?
  • Mechanism: can I explain how it happens?
  • Application: can I use the idea in an unfamiliar example?

Turn a keyword into a causal explanation

Original practice example: explain why an enzyme-catalysed reaction may slow down at a temperature well above the enzyme’s optimum, assuming the other conditions stay the same.

A useful explanation links the high temperature to disruption of the enzyme’s three-dimensional structure, a change in the active site, and fewer substrate molecules binding successfully. ‘The enzyme dies’ is inaccurate: an enzyme is a molecule, not a living organism.

This is an illustrative answer, not an official marking scheme. Check the wording and required detail against the question and your teacher’s feedback. Avoid saying every temperature increase denatures an enzyme: the condition ‘well above the optimum’ is doing important work here.

Use a short error log

After a quiz or written answer, record the smallest useful correction. Give the entry a topic, the error, the corrected idea and a question you will try again. For example: ‘Enzymes — wrote dies — active site changes shape — explain reduced substrate binding.’

Separate a knowledge gap from a reading mistake. If you missed ‘compare’, practise a paired comparison; if you forgot a definition, retrieve the definition. The next task should address the reason for the error.

A 30-minute session you can repeat

Adjust the timings to your workload. Revisit the same idea later in the week using a different question. A correct answer you can explain is more useful evidence of progress than a chapter you have highlighted.

  • 5 minutes: choose a learning target and recall what you already know.
  • 8 minutes: read only the explanation needed to repair the gaps.
  • 7 minutes: draw or explain the idea with the notes closed.
  • 7 minutes: attempt a short question and check the answer.
  • 3 minutes: record one correction and schedule another attempt.
