Study planning

Build an HKDSE weekly revision plan you can actually finish

A revision plan should tell you what to do next, not make every evening look full. Start with the time you genuinely have, choose a few testable targets and leave room for schoolwork to change. This example is a planning template you can adapt, not a required timetable.

Put fixed commitments in first

Write down school, travel, homework deadlines, activities and time to rest before adding revision. If Tuesday already has a long activity and a major deadline, it may need only a short review. Plan around your real week.

Choose a small number of revision blocks you can protect. A 25-minute block is an example, not a rule: use a duration that lets you complete a meaningful task without rushing. Leave a gap between longer blocks.

Replace subject names with outcomes

‘Biology, 7–8 pm’ does not say what success looks like. ‘Explain osmosis without notes and answer one application question’ does. For Mathematics, a target could be ‘solve four simultaneous-equation problems and check substitutions’. For English, try ‘revise one paragraph using the teacher’s feedback’.

Pick targets from recent mistakes, unfinished learning and upcoming assessments. Do not fill the whole week with your favourite subject while postponing the one you find difficult.

  • Red: I cannot yet explain or apply the idea.
  • Amber: I can manage it with prompts, but make errors independently.
  • Green: I can complete a representative task and explain my answer.

An example school-week plan

Keep homework separate unless it genuinely tests the target you chose. If the week is crowded, reduce the number of blocks. The aim is a plan you can use consistently, not a perfect-looking grid.

DayOne achievable target
MondayBiology: retrieve osmosis, then answer and check one short question.
TuesdayEnglish: improve one paragraph using feedback; record the change.
WednesdayMathematics: attempt four selected problems and redo one error.
ThursdayA second subject: explain a weak topic, then check against notes.
FridayShort mixed review of Monday and Wednesday’s targets.
SaturdayOne longer practice task, followed by marking and an error log.
SundayCatch up if needed; check progress and choose next week’s targets.

Change the emphasis from S4 to S6

In S4, use the plan to consolidate what you have just learned and build accurate explanations. In S5, make space to revisit earlier topics while learning new ones. In S6, include timed practice once the relevant content is secure, and reserve time to mark and repair errors.

These are suggested emphases, not fixed stages. Your school’s teaching order, assessments and current strengths should determine the plan. A student in S6 may still need untimed work on a difficult concept.

When you miss a session

Move the unfinished target into the catch-up slot or replace a lower-priority task. Do not automatically double tomorrow’s workload. If several sessions are missed, shorten the plan and ask which commitments made the original version unrealistic.

Keep the target specific when moving it. ‘Catch up Biology’ can expand indefinitely; ‘redo the osmosis explanation and check one question’ has an endpoint.

Review evidence, not just hours

At the end of the week, look at answers, corrected errors and explanations you can give without prompts. Mark a target as secure only when the evidence supports it. Decide what needs another attempt, and carry that into next week.

TeachAI DSE’s learning checklist can help you identify topics to revisit. Its revision planner gives you a place to organise sessions after signing in. Treat the plan as adjustable: a missed day is information for the next version, not a reason to abandon the whole routine.
